New Albums
« on: July 14, 2006, 03:11:20 AM »

Does anybody know what the real deal is with the upcoming albums? Billboard say there's 6 new albums, Pitchfork says that has since been proven false. I previously read that Nashville Moon was coming out in September. Now I hear that it's not even gonna come out this year. And this website says that the lost Shohola album will be included with Fading Trails this September, while other places report that Shohola is an entirely separate album altogether. Is The Black Ram coming out this year? Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Because it doesn't seem like it.

I called Secretly Canadian Records in Indiana, and asked about all of these new Magnolia releases,  and this is what they told me:

The Jason Molina solo record "Let Me Go" will be out first and that should be in August, but the band is likely to have limited copies for sale on tour.   The next release is "Fading Trails" and that is supposed to be out later this year, they said Fall.   That one has songs from all of the following sessions:  The Nashville Moon, The Black Ram, The Sun Sessions, Shohola.  That was all they had, nothing concrete about releasing the complete sessions individually.  They are really nice too for a record label to have someone to answer questions directly.

I think that these tracks will appear at some point in 2007, although I
can't say what form it'll be in. As far as I know, "Nashville Moon" will NOT
be released as a stand-alone entity.

Colour me disappointed.  I love the continuity of albums.  All songs recorded together and at the same locale.  I really could do without a comp-like release from Jason and Co.  Comps suck it and I really enjoy how Molina albums are like snapshots of a certain time/place.  I don't know.  I can't explain why I like albums so much, but I do.

I know it'd be expensive for SC to try and release 5 albums from 1 artist.  But they could at least be assured that I'd by them all.  That's like $50 right there.

Man, just press 'em all on like 1000 vinyl and pack 'em with CDRs like the Pyramid/Magnolia Electric Co.

Count me in,  these better be released as complete sessions or I'll be pissed to have bought a compilation.    I talked to Jason back in February at Schubas and he promised that the sessions would be coming out as individual records no matter what, but that there would be something first from Secretly Canadian.   I guess "Fading Trails" is it.    Here's my 20 dollars towards the first of those full session  L.P.'s!

Jesus, that would be horrible if they made compilations like that. That's not a real album if you ask me. Just a collection of songs. Shit, if I wanted to listen to a shuffle I'd buy an iPod.

Yeah... uhhh, unless the songs all share either certain thematic or sonic qualities, which uhhhh, now that I think about it, is pretty common for Jason Molina. Chill out.

Well, my question is, what happened to Nashville Moon? They released a tracklist and everything, like they had it all planned out, and now we're told it's not even coming out? How and why did that happen? They recorded that album last summer, right? So now I get the impression that for some reason they've taken what was considered a coherent album and chopped it up for some untold reason. Maybe I'm wrong, but there's no way to know since they seem to want to keep fans in the dark about everything. Would it really be that hard for Secretly Canadian to do a press release explaining what's going on?

Well, my question is, what happened to Nashville Moon?

apparently it set! *rimshot*

you're worrying way too much about this. seriously. you've got two full-length albums still to come in 2006 and who knows what to come in 2007 and beyond. after the cycle of press wears down surrounding let me go and fading trails, i'm sure we'll start hearing about future plans...

Yeah, I know. I suppose that reading that post it sounds like I'm really pissed, but really I'm just mildly annoyed. It just seems weird that they'd have an album all set, tracklist and everything, and then pull it with no explanation. Can't really complain too much with all these upcoming releases.

it's always possible that the band is changing its name to fading trails next year and this will be the final magnolia electric co. release... he's done it before!

(okay, now i'm just being absurd...)

Ohhhh !
I'm waiting for the "Nashville Moon" as the absolutely best rocak album forever, according to the announced songs and the Steve Albini production... and now it says that ! I'm very unhappy about it !
I just listened "Fading Trails" and it's like a compilation, I also prefer the album from one session or two like a vinyl with two sides, but "Fading Trails" has too many sessions. The songs are very good but...

“nashville moon” on the horizon (March 31st, 2006)

no release date has been set, but a tracklist is now available for the upcoming magnolia electric co. album “nashville moon” recorded by steve albini. featuring twelve tracks and clocking in at about 45 minutes, it looks something like this: lonesome valley / montgomery bound / don’t fade on me / hammer down / no moon on the water / nashville moon / what comes after the blues / north star / don’t this look like the dark / bowery / texas 71 / down the wrong road both ways

I'm assuming this album won't ever be seeing the light of day, considering that it would only have only 4 never-before-released songs. I don't suppose anyone has any idea what's going on with the supposed upcoming albums? Nah, I didn't think so. I guess they prefer to make misleading statements to heighten our anticipation and then leave us disappointed and in the dark.

I gotta say, I find Fading Trails to be pretty disappointing. And there doesn't seem to be any connection between the songs. Sounds like a random collection of songs thrown together and called an album. I gotta wonder if MagElecCo and Secretly Canadian have any idea what they're doing. Maybe they don't. That would explain why they can't tell us anything.

I finally got a hang of a copy of Let me go, let me go, let me go. I haven't listened to much else since. With the first listens I had the same feeling as RavingLunatic, not a track that jumps out like the titletrack on Pyramid Electric Co. But after listened to it with attention in the good atmosphere (alone, at night, in a cosy darkness) I really love it. Slow, dark, haunting sound, depressing lyrics, cool drumcomputer... everything I want it to be. I think it needs a good listen before you can appreciate the album; the album doesn't change vibe, the tracks are very implicit. I must say I really enjoy this in between MEC albums, although I am really fond of MEC, I think I do prefer this side of him.

I agree, after several listens, I really love this album, and I discovered Molina with Farewell Transmission, so I not overly familiar with his sparce and quiet side.  Greta stuff!

BTW, got a good review in Pitchfork today.  The review actually reads much better than the numeric rank they gave it.  Too bad, cause the casual reader that isn't familiar with Molina will see the 7.9 and think it not worth their time, even though it reads like a 8.5 or 9.
