Ahhh...There's something very satisfying knowing Molina has rubbed off on us guys all the way over in Australia. I heard them while trying to take a nap behind my mates desk at work (yes I know). She had it on her play list but had no idea who they were. After some serious hunting and online shopping I'd have to say he is unquestionably my favourite artist of all time.

First heard Jason at MacRock in Virginia in April of 2002. Anyone else at that festival? The fire dept. asked that everyone standing/sitting in the aisle/not properly seated to leave the venue, so he took a tiny batterypowered amp and played outside on the steps of the town hall. It was dark out and 200 people were standing on the lawn of Harrisonburg city hall watching him quietly while the police stood on the outskirts waiting for the show to be over.
Apparently Captain Badass was one of the few songs he played that night. Would love to hear any recordings or see pics from that night.

I regularly receive the catalogue of a German mailorder/label called Glitterhouse. In 2000 I read a raving review about The Lioness in there and had a listen to the album. I loved it from the start. The Black Crow has remained one of my all-time favourite songs until today. Since then I follow Jason Molina's releases and I tried to get hold of all the non-album tracks he has recorded. He continues to amaze me with all the fantastic work he does.

Somehow in all my years of musical searching I managed to miss both Jason Molina AND Will Johnson. I was listening to The Loft on XM a couple of months ago and they do a weekly show called "Your Roots Are Showing," and they played 3 or 4 tracks from the then just released Molina and Johnson. I immediately went to iTunes and got it and started collecting back catalog. Then I started collecting the song tabs for guitar.
I'm very glad to have found all this great music.

I "discovered" Songs: Ohia at Good Records in Dallas Texas back in 2000.

Oddly enough, I discovered Jason Molina via a review on Pitchfork. At the time, this sort of music certainly wasn't my cup of tea, but something about the review for Songs:ohia's Magnolia Electric Co. sparked my interest, and I picked it up.
Upon first listen, I think I was probably just a little lukewarm and underwhelmed by it. I know my first impression of Molina's voice was that he sounded an awful lot like Neil Young. But over the next few months, I found myself returning to the album again and again. The melodies got stuck in my head, and the atmosphere and sincerity of the music spoke to me on levels I wasn't even aware of at the time. And before long, I didn't hear Neil Young anymore; I just heard Jason Molina. I've been a fan ever since.
It's a rare thing to find songs that are so catchy, yet have such depth and so much staying power. To this day, I can still find new nuances when I listen to this album in particular. I can think of very few albums that I can say that about. The Pogues' Peace and Love is one of the other scant few.

I was slaving away as a meat covered robot on the production line at Ford Motor Company. The only modicum of relief from the back breaking work that is an auto assembly line was listening to the radio. Unfortunately, Atlanta has some of the most god awful radio programming that I became totally discussed with every single rock station on the dial. One day I cranked the tuner all the way down to WRAS 88.5, Georgia State University radio. There i was introduced to many, many new artists that I had never before heard. I was so intrigued with all the new music that I began scribbling down the names of the bands and the titles of albums. One of the artists that I immediately fell in love with was Songs: Ohia. "Didn't It Rain" had just come out and they were playing the song "Blue Factory Flame." I had fully intended to seek out and purchase the CD, but I ended up quitting that mind numbing, back breaking job and misplaced my list. Fast forward a couple of years. I was riding around Atlanta listening to 88.5 (I never went back to commercial radio ever again) when low and behold they play either "Farewell Transmission" or "I've Been Riding With The Ghost" (I can't remember which all these years later). I was like, "Holy crap that's that band that I really liked when I was slaving away at Ford!" Thankfully the DJ gave the name of the band at the end of the song. I made a beeline for Criminal Records in Little Five Points. I bought both "Didn't It Rain" and "MECo" without hesitation. I now own just about every thing Jason has ever released as well as numerous live shows downloaded from the net. I have seen Jason solo and with various sidemen on at least 10+ different occasions. I have also had the honor of video taping at least six or more of those shows and had the pleasure of conversing with Jason and the other guys numerous times. They are all really nice people. The weirdest experience I ever had was one night Jason and I were talking about how much we both loved Johnny Cash. I'm not really sure how we got onto the subject of JC that night but, the very next day I read that JC had passed either late the night before or early that morning. I don't know if Jason remembers that conversation, but I will never forget it. How weird and small the world seems when something like that happens. Oh, the other great artist that I discovered during my time as a indentured servant at Ford was Neko Case. If you have never heard Neko you are truly missing out on the female equivalent of Jason.
