I discovered Jason Molina via the Songs:Ohia name while listening to Pandora. I then joined Emusic in July 2007 and downloaded Axxess & Ace. From that point on I was hooked. Jason is one of the best musicians I have heard...ever.
So...I was wondering how others may have discovered Jason Molina, Song:Ohia, Magnolia Electric Co. and/or other incarnations of Jason Molina and his wonderful group of fellow musicians.
Also...I am about to die waiting to see him in concert. Congrats to all who have seen him live, especially to those who have had the opportunity to meet him.

Pretty sure some mailing list I was on recommended Songs:Ohia, around 2002. I fell in love with Axxess & Ace and Didn't It Rain. First show was in October 2002. Have been on board ever since.

heard an mp3 of Farewell Transmission, probably 04, still my favorite. I was slow to love the old stuff but now I adore his whole catalog, from solo, S:O, ASOR, and Magnolia and I can't wait for the Will Johnson project.

In 2003, a friend of mine told me about one group named "Songs", and the disc named "Ohia", and he said I like it (my favourite classics were Neil Young, Van Morrison, John Fogerty, Townes Van Zandt, Hank Williams...). He was right ! The disc was "Didn't It Rain", and I couldn't stop listening it for months...

I subscribed to Temporary Residence's "Travels In Constants 2" series because The Black Heart Procession was originally going to be a part of it. When the Songs: Ohia disc came in the mail, it was quite intriguing and led to the purchase of "Didn't It Rain". Although the band made more of an impression with my wife at first, the next disc sold me on Jason Molina's trip for good. And I've been riding with the host ever since...
Peace.

I discovered Impala by chance in Rough Trade Records in Notting Hill and was blown away by it's uniqueness and then sought out everything I could find, thankfully this was before the stuff went for crazy prices on ebay, saw him live a number of times in 99/2000. That period from 98 through to 2002/03 was such an amazing collection of music,I don't connect with the Magnolia stuff the same way as I did the Ohia or indeed solo stuff but still treasure those old recordings and look forward for another Let Me Go type recording in the near future!

I bought The Lioness when it came out based on a review, and fell in love with it after a few listens. Got to see Songs: Ohia in concert just a couple of months after, and was totally blown away by the performance. When Ghost Tropic came out a few months later, I was completely hooked. It was the most haunting, beautiful album I'd ever heard - and still to this day its my favorite Molina release.

A friend of my brother recommended Magnolia Electric Co, he thought I would like it. That was in 2005 when 'What Comes After The Blues' was released. I did some research on the internet. First song I heard was 'I've been riding with the ghost'. I hurried to the record store; bought whatever they had of MEC (which was 'The Magnolia Electric Co' and 'What Comes After The Blues'). Loved it. Few days later I came to understand the situation with the different names Songs:Ohia/Jason Molina/MEC. So again, I hurried to the record store to get everything I could get (I think 'Lioness' and 'Didn't it Rain'). From the moment I heard 'I've been riding with the ghost', I was hooked. That was a bad month for my financial situation being a student at the time, but an amazing 'musical' time which I experience again every time JM/MEC releases something new.

The girl I was seeing in 2000 really liked this Dublin band The Frames that we used to go see a lot, and their singer put out a split 7" with Songs Ohia. So as a dutiful boyfriend I got it for her for her birthday, and ended up listening to the Songs Ohia side way more than the other one. She thought it was a bit dreary, and we broke up soon afterwards (unrelatedly! I think..). Axxess & Ace came next, and then everything else.

Interesting! I love The Frames! But I disovered Songs: Ohia first when a friend put Steve Albini Blues on a mix tape which I got hooked on, and listened to a lot of other Songs:Ohia stuff..I was attracted to the rawness and vulnerability of Jason's songs - powerful stuff. And a few years later, I discovered The Frames and had no idea that two of my favourite musicians, Glen and Jason were friends until I read about this split 7" - what a sweet surprise!!! I felt like everything made sense!

i was living in a small town called alfred in new york. the middle of nowhere and hours from anywhere going to grad school. not much music came through this place and i saw a flyer for a songs:ohia show. i had seen the name on the unaccompanied voice comp because the band low was on it and they are one of my favorites. decided to go. didn't it rain had just come out. i bought the vinyl without hearing the show yet because i loved the look of it. mr molina played solo and i was completely floored. love all his stuff, but listen to that one so so much.

In 1998 I was in college in Vermont, and Songs: Ohia played a show at my school with Oneida. I'd seen the flyers, which I think were images from the self-titled record, and thought it looked interesting.
I remember that the band, including Jason, played seated, to about 15-20 of us. Jason offered a new vinyl copy of "Impala" to anyone who knew Geezer Butler's (Black Sabbath) real name. None of us did. Then he changed it to Ozzy's, and I yelled out "John!" and won the record. I remember thinking that I had to buy whatever CDs they were selling because they were so obscure, I'd never find them.
After Jason's set, and before Oneida's, I asked him if he was going to stick around for a while since I needed to drive 20 minutes into town to the nearest ATM so I could get cash to buy his records. And that's what I did!

The death in vegas 'back to mine' compilation. A horrible person I used to work with brought it in to work with him one day, he said the cd was great apart from one track which happened to be songs:ohia soul, by far the most breatiful song I have ever heard, I went straight out and found the lioness and magnolia electric co. Turns out the guy I hated in work introduced me to my favourite musician.

I am not going to get into specifics, but I have known JaMo since before the songs:Ohia period. What I can tell fans, that they probably don't know is that Jason is a fantastic bass player, and that his "background" is in metal, speed metal and very heavy rock is very real. Rock out, feel real music.
Signed,
Mankin/Glen/Erie
