Wow, thanks for putting this up. It's the most comprehensive list of Molina rareties I've ever seen. I wasn't even aware of some of those recent releases. I'd love to get my paws on those old SC cassettes - I wonder what other treats they contained apart from the S:O? A lot of the stuff I don't have seems to be download only releases - I really can't stand it when there's no plastic copy.

I have to question if this should be listed, as it's not really him... and it's unlistenable.

I have everything up to the Isn't Romantic Comp on 4 cds that I compiled from from all the original sources a while back.
The stuff on those cassttes came from some live shows that are pretty widely circulated, I have both complete shows. I don't recall much else of interest on them.
I do wish he'd re-release some of the earlier 7" singles digitally because they were pretty bad pressings to start with and even after some cleaning up on soundforge there is still a lot of surface noise on a bunch of them.

Unlistenable? Egads! I won't be getting that one then. But the question is: is it official? Was permission given to remix it and/or was the remixed version approved by Jason? MAHAW, are you out there?...

Peace.

I THOUGHT IT WAS AN INTERESTING IDEA.  IN THE WORLD OF ARTISTS WORKING WITH OTHER ARTISTS IT GETS PRETTY MURKY.  EGO'S, MONEY, MANAGERS.  I LIKE AVOIDING ALL OF THAT.  IN THE CASE OF THIS PARTICULAR TRACK.  JOE BEATS APPROACHED ME AND ASKED IF HE COULD TAKE A TUNE OF MINE AND WORK ON IT.  I SAID YES AND THAT WAS ALL.  NO MONEY, NO MANAGEMENT, NO EGO'S, NO PROBLEM.  IT'S A TASTE THING IF YOU LIKE IT OR NOT.  I LIKE IT ON THE ATTITUDE BEING POSITIVE AND THAT AN ARTIST OUTSIDE OF THE TRADITIONAL REALM OF MUSIC LIKE MY OWN WOULD HAVE THE GUTS TO TRY THIS OUT.  THE GUY HAS HEART NO MATTER WHAT.  GENRE JUMPING IS ALWAYS A LITTLE HARD FOR THE DIE HARDS AND I UNDERSTAND.  AS A SONGWRITER I DON'T FEEL LIKE I HAVE TO STICK TO ONE PATH AT ALL.  SIDE BY SIDE WITH ALL OF THE MUSIC I'VE MADE OVER THE YEARS, I HAVE TRIED TO ESTABLISH AN INDEPENDENCE FROM THE REGULAR FORM OF RECORD MAKING.  I LIVE THANKFULLY IN A WORLD WHERE I CAN MAKE MY MUSIC FREE OF MANAGERS AND MAJOR LABELS.  THAT IS DUE TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE THAT BUY THE RECORDS AND COME TO THE SHOWS AND EVEN THE ONES IN OKC. OR MEMPHIS WHO WILL DO UP A PROPER BBQ FOR US.  IT'S GETTING HARD OUT HERE BUT THE GOOD BANDS ARE HARDER.  LOOK AT THE TOUCH N' GO SITUATION.  IF YOU KNOW ANY OF THESE BANDS OR HAVE BEEN A LITTLE BEHIND ON THE OLD RECORD COLLECTION THEN HELP A BROTHER OUT. SO MUCH GREAT MUSIC WAS DONE ON THAT IMPRINT AND SO MANY GOOD BANDS MADE UP OF GOOD PEOPLE.    SECRETLY CANADIAN HAS TAKEN A LOT OF CUES FROM THAT LABEL AND I  PERSONALLY AM FRIENDS WITH MANY ON IT.  I AM AFRAID OF A DAY WHEN I GET A CALL FROM ONE OF THE GREATEST LABELS IN THE WORLD (SC) TELLING ME THAT MAGNOLIA IS DROPPED. WHERE WOULD WE BE THEN?  LET US ALL KEEP THAT DAY AT BAY BY DOING WHAT WE CAN.  BUY A POSTER, BUY A RECORD AT THE SHOP THAT JUST IS STARTING OUT, SHAKE A HAND OR TWO, MAKE A HOME MADE BAND T-SHIRT AND WEAR IT AROUND.  WE'RE IN THIS ALL TOGETHER AND IT REALLY ISN'T A GAME.  OR AT LEAST I DON'T WANT TO BE ON THE LOOSING END.  HOPE THIS IS OF HELP.  JMo.

Thanks for the info, Jason. So I WILL be getting it then. I was curious to hear it anyway because there's a few other artists on there I like. And the William Schaff cover art is fantastic as well!...

As for the other stuff, I'm all for those who can make it work without involving the major labels! And to be able to do it for more than a few years/records is a testament to both your dedication to and the quality of your art. I hope the smaller labels can survive in these changing times. Frankly, a lot of them are probably more savvy than the majors when it comes to finding new ways to market and deliver their product. Long may they run...

Some things that I got over the years on T&G: The Butthole Surfers, Big Black, The Black Heart Procession, Blonde Redhead, Dirty Three, Killdozer...all records I'm happy to have in my collection...

Peace.

I SEEM TO HAVE BEEN AT A LOT OF SHOWS WITH YOU OVER THE YEARS, OR AT LEAST WE SHARE A LOT OF SIMILAR TITLES IN OUR COLLECTION.  I'VE ALWAYS FELT LIKE I SHOULD NOT WAIT TO STEP IN WHEN HELP IS NEEDED.  NOW IT IS COMING TO THE WIRE.  BANDS NEED HELP NOW MORE THAN I'VE EVER SEEN.  BANDS ARE CANCELING TOURS, DELAYING RECORDINGS AND RECORDS, LEAVING/BEING DROPPED BY LABELS.   I'VE TRIED TO SPREAD WHAT LITTLE I'VE MADE ACROSS THE CREATIVE WORLD.  THAT MEANS HELPING A BAND WHEN THEY HAD THEIR GEAR STOLEN OR PAYING A SUPPORT BAND A LITTLE EXTRA BECAUSE THEY ARE DIRT POOR AND KICKING ASS.  I JUST TRY TO WORK HARDER TO HELP THE INDIE BANDS AND SONGWRITERS.  THIS WORK IS MY BREAD AND BUTTER AND I'VE PUT MY BACK INTO IT ALL ALONG.  IT IS ALSO THEIR BREAD AND BUTTER AND I UNDERSTAND IT EAR TO TAIL.  I JUST WISH I WAS ABLE TO HELP EVERYONE.  AS A MUSICIAN I TRY TO PUT OUT THE BEST VALUE FOR THE DOUGH.  I KNOW THAT BOX SET SEEMED LIKE A LOT BUT I SLEEP WITH A SMILE AND GOOD FEELING ABOUT IT.  IT WILL TAKE A WHILE FOR EACH OF THOSE RECORDS TO BE FULLY DIGESTED FOR SURE.  I AM JUST LOOKING FOR NEW WAYS TO HELP THE SCENE.  OH, THE NEXT SILKSCREEN TOUR POSTER SERIES IS GOING TO BE WONDERFUL, HELPING AMAZING ARTISTS WHO LOVE THIS MUSIC (THE BAND DOES NOT MAKE ANYTHING FROM THESE PROJECTS).  I'LL DO MY PART.  JMo.

So I check Boomkat (an online record store) every now and then for downloads of vinyl-only releases. I would never pay for an mp3, but they sell FLACs and I'm more than happy to shell out a few extra bucks to get lossless digital copies instead of ripping the vinyl myself.

They currently have the Western Vinyl 7" available in FLAC and, it would seem (though I didn't investigate too far) they have the 7" in stock, as well.

Maybe this is still in print and not even rare, I don't know. But certainly there must be some folks who need a copy.

EDIT - Scratch that... I just listened to the FLACs and they sound terrible. They're taken from vinyl and sound vastly inferior to my own rips. They DO have the actual 7" though...

JASON MOLINA: No Moon On The Water 7” 2004:
No Moon On The Water
In The Human World

VARIOUS ARTISTS: Isn’t It Romantic BOOK/CD 2004:
Down The Wrong Road Both Ways [2:56]

Are these different versions than the ones on Sojourner? I would assume Down the Wrong Road is because the track length is shorter (2:56 vs. 3:23), but wasn't sure about the 7". Thanks!

Completely different. The 7" is acoustic and one of my favorite 7"s.

I absolutley love the acoustic versions, yet when I first heard the full band version on No Moon On The Water on MySpace I was blown away. The band versions are great.

PS - That version of Down The Wrong Road Both Ways in the book is the better recording, in my opinion. Always loved it.

Comical Crusade

Does anyone know ANYTHING about the Jason Molina / Brendon Massei / Spencer Kingman collaboration "Comical Crusade"??

I believe Brendon Massei used to play with Songs: Ohia and then opened a few shows as the Viking Moses.  I've seen him perform live and his music is absolutely riveting.. it hits the bone in the same way that Jason's music does.  I would LOVE to hear anything they've worked on together... so if anyone knows the whereabouts of this recording, I'd be much obliged.

I'm salivating at the thought of this record's existence.. but I have a dark, looming feeling that it's probably a lost or buried recording.. just hoping that someone can disabuse me of this feeling...
